The ability to communicate is a vital skill and we ensure that children are given a ‘voice’ to communicate. Children will have many experiences that allow them to practise their democratic understanding. These have included: voting for school councillors each year, taking part in school forum and completing questionnaires regarding areas of their learning, well-being and pupil experience.Â
The Rule of Law
Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws. Classroom and playground rules, stories supporting values, rewards and consequences and safety workshops with external visitors all reinforce this message. Every other year, our Y5 and Y6 pupils have the opportunity of visiting London which includes a tour around the Houses of Parliament and a visit with our MP if they are in London at the time. This gives our pupils the opportunity to learn about the role the Government plays in our daily life, the importance of democracy and voting and law-making.Â
Individual Liberty
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school weprovide boun daries for young pupils to make choices safely. Â Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety, PSHE lessons and bullying and safety workshops.Â
Mutual Respect
Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect.
